Online “Photoshop” Alternatives

One of my favorite programs to use is Adobe Photoshop CS3. I absolutely love it!
About 90% of the work I do is with CS3.  One huge problem with Photoshop (and any other Adobe program) is that it is very expensive. I think the new CS4 suite is going for $1,800.00! That’s pretty steep for designers that are just starting out.
Recently I was talking to a friend of mine who was taking a course in Digital Media. She needed some help with an assignment that required her to use Photoshop. Problem was that she didn’t have Photoshop and couldn’t afford it. She used the “Try It” version but that had expired and really didn’t have any other options. For the life of me I could not understand how the course would have their students pay for the course (up to $4000 per semester) and then require them to pay another $2000 on books and programs.
